Functionization of SiO2 nanoparticles using alkylsilane for hydrophobic optical coating

The paper presents a modification of SiO2 spherical nanoparticles by using the hydrothermal-condensation method and probe-typed ultrasonication. Alkylsilane (Chlorotrimethylsilane-CTMS) was used as a reagent in SiO2 functionalization. Properties of the functionalized SiO2 such as morphology, size distribution, percent mass of elements, and chemical bonding were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). CTMS-based silanization established multiple Si-OCH3 chains that were necessary for hydrophobization of SiO2 surface.
