This paper presents the preparation of superfine HMX (Octogen) by drowning-out recrystallization. HMX was recrystallized from 5 different solvents: dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylformamide (DMF), acetonitrile (ACN), cyclohexanone (CHN), and acetone by using an aqueous antisolvent of water. Process parameters such as type of solvent, solvent and water temperature, agitation rates, and additional rates of solution were studied. The properties of the resulting HMX, including shape, cumulative size and volume density distribution, crystal phase, and thermal stability were characterized. The results suggested that the superfine β-HMX could be prepared by drowning-out recrystallization in acetone solvent by choosing suitable process parameters.
